ICMA’s role is to provide leadership in a way that allows its members to maintain their professional networks at a time when politics could otherwise take over and isolate us from one another. We convene, we discuss, and we do so in ways that helps members (and ourselves) navigate the increasingly blurry line between policy and politics.

Connection is an important part of leadership. As an association, ICMA wants to connect with its members and create pathways for them to connect with one another. As our colleagues face tragedy and difficulties (man-made or natural), being there for one another is critical.

Connection extends beyond human interaction and is also practical, operational, and tactical. As members navigate new and sometimes unchartered territory, the connections you have with one another is a critical space for sharing resources and ideas. ICMA cannot have all the answers on emerging issues, but we know you can be there for one another. This is why ICMA Connect is a place where members can pose questions and share resources. If you find yourself needing ideas or emerging practices, this is a place to ask for help.

Operations are at the heart of what you all do every day. The job is made more difficult when you also must navigate community politics. Each of you work in different contexts, and the Declaration of Ideals reminds us that we must “Recognize the right of citizens to influence decisions that affect their well-being; advocate a forum for meaningful citizen participation and expression of the political process; and facilitate the clarification of community values and goals.” Supporting you as you support your policy makers as they navigate community values keeps us grounded in our why.

While the storms will come, we are reminded that professional managers must lean into the Code of Ethics, Declaration of Ideals, and each another as we figure out how to stay in our lane when the lane lines are disappearing.

Leadership that is grounded, ethical, and supportive is strong. Thanks for being there for one another—personally and operationally. Connection is a key part of membership.
