Are you an ICMA member serving as assistant, deputy, or assistant to the manager and eager to explore the inner workings and best practices of a different local government? The Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Exchange (ACAO) Exchange may be the perfect opportunity for you. This preconference event, scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026, is designed for deputies, assistants, and assistants to the manager seeking inspiration and insights. Members will be paired with staff from the Los Angeles areas host cities, who will provide insight about their best practices and service delivery strategies.
Event Details
The ACAO Exchange offers a unique chance to delve into community leadership. Participants will gain behind-the-scenes access to observe how communities and local governments in the Los Angeles area address local government challenges and provide exceptional services to their communities.
Participants are expected to arrive in Long Beach on Thursday, October 15, 2026, to prepare for a full-day adventure on Friday. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., host organizations will guide participants through their operations, sharing successes and strategies. After the day's activities, join fellow participants at a reception to exchange stories, build connections, and gather valuable insights. Apply through this link before Monday, May 11, 2026.
Application Information
Eligibility: The ACAO Exchange is open to ICMA members serving as assistants, deputies, or assistants to the manager.
Requirements: Selected individuals must arrive in Tampa on Thursday, October 15, to participate in the exchange on Friday, October 16, and are responsible for travel expenses.
Selection: Participants will be selected by a subcommittee of ICMA's ACAO Committee and matched with host organizations.
Notification: Applicants will be informed of their acceptance by email by the latest the week of June 1, 2026, in time to register for the ICMA conference and make travel arrangements.
