Since 2004, Sarasota County has proudly opened its doors to the next generation of local government leaders through the ICMA Local Government Management Fellowship (LGMF). What started as an opportunity to mentor aspiring professionals has grown into a dynamic, mutually beneficial partnership that continues to shape both careers and our community in meaningful ways.

For students pursuing their master of public administration (MPA) or master of public policy (MPP), the fellowship offers far more than a line on a resume. It’s a launchpad. Fellows step into real-world work within the county, working alongside seasoned leaders and contributing to high-impact projects. They don’t just observe; they lead, innovate, and leave their mark.

Over the years, Sarasota County has welcomed a remarkable group of fellows who have brought fresh perspectives, bold ideas, and an eagerness to make a difference. From enhancing internal operations to developing new public-facing programs, fellows consistently inject energy and creativity into our organization. Their work has helped us think differently, act strategically, and better serve our community.

Highlighted are four inspiring testimonials from past ICMA fellows whose time in Sarasota County proved to be truly transformative. Their stories reflect a common theme: the fellowship didn’t just shape their careers, it accelerated them. Many have gone on to hold influential leadership roles across the country, carrying with them the lessons, mentorship, and unforgettable experiences gained right here.

Laurel Varnel

“I'm currently the director of the Office of Housing Recovery for the State of Colorado, and the ICMA fellowship at Sarasota County helped me gain invaluable experience that launched my career in state and local government. I am thankful for the opportunities and connections I gained through the fellowship and for solidifying my commitment to public service.”

Mary Furtado

“My LGMF experience in Sarasota County turned out to be the true cornerstone of my local government career. I was exposed to the management perspective from the very first day, which helped me understand stewardship of the whole organization, the whole community. I was challenged to find my professional voice through exposure to a wide range of local government issues and experiences, and I was pushed to add value (even before I realized I brought any to the table), which in turn gave me confidence to keep showing up. I was supported and mentored every step of the way. Sarasota County taught me what a culture of high performance looks like, and how it makes a positive difference for our residents and communities. I'm grateful for the organization's commitment to paying it forward through investing in me and others like me early in my career, and I've tried to honor that commitment by doing the same for others any chance I get.”

Auria Spranger

“My fellowship experience with Sarasota County led me to my current role as an associate counsel for the largest credit union in Florida, providing invaluable training in stakeholder engagement, negotiation, and delivering effective legal solutions. I am incredibly grateful to the leadership of ICMA, Sarasota County, and the Sarasota community for their mentorship, support, and commitment to developing future public service leaders.”

Jon Radermacher

“My fellowship experience in Sarasota County was an amazing opportunity to develop my skills and knowledge in local government. Sarasota County allowed me to tailor my experience to broaden my knowledge base and prepare me for a leadership role in local government administration. Thanks to the support and mentorship of all those at Sarasota County during my fellowship in 2008-2009, I was able to transition from a fellow to a city manager for a small community in rural Minnesota, which has continued with 16 years of experience in three communities.”

Jon Radermacher, city administrator, Cannon Falls, Minnesota

Benefits for the Organization

Hosting LGMF participants has also strengthened Sarasota County as an organization. Fellows challenge us to stay curious, to question the status quo, and to continuously improve. They bring academic knowledge into practical application, often bridging the gap between theory and implementation in ways that spark innovation across departments.

Being one of the longest-running ICMA fellowship hosts since the program’s inception in 2004 is a point of pride for Sarasota County. It reflects our deep commitment to professional development, public service excellence, and cultivating the future leaders of local government. We don’t just invest in fellows; we invest in the future of our profession.

The ICMA LGMF program isn’t just a fellowship. At Sarasota County, it’s a legacy of leadership in the making.

As a truly grateful fellow of Sarasota County, it means so much to share this story. I am so excited to watch our newest fellow begin his journey and carry this legacy forward.
