Business and property owners along the I-394 corridor between the city of Minneapolis, Minnesota (383,000), and several suburbs–Golden Valley (20,000), St. Louis Park (44,000), and Minnetonka (51,000)—can join the 394 block club, operated jointly by the police departments of the participating cities. Once they sign up, these businesses receive e-mail alerts from the police and from each other. These alerts include notices about crimes and surveillance camera photos. The block club keeps participants aware of criminal activity and enables them to warn their neighbors and the police about suspicious activity. The system has proved extremely helpful to the police in locating suspects and identifying patterns of crime that cross municipal boundaries. Each police department helps moderate the electronic discussion list and distributes flyers to potential new block club members to let them know that the service is available. The program requires no maintenance and costs virtually nothing.
