North Port, Florida is a rapidly growing municipality with a dedicated and diligent city manager by the name of Steven S. Crowell. In 2008, Mr. Crowell wrote an e-mail to employees asking for suggestions on how to get local government more involved with local community on a more personal level that would make a difference. The organization that emerged was called Neighborhood Initiatives by City Employees (the N.I.C.E. Guys for short) and, after a flurry of suggestions, it was determined that it would embark on a project to raise community morale “house by house.” N.I.C.E Guys would do this by painting and landscaping a needy resident’s home.
