The City of Sunrise, in southeast Florida, is a diverse community of 90,000 residents. Once known as a retirement haven, the city has embraced its changing demographic – shaped by younger families attracted to Sunrise’s affordable homes and quality amenities.

In fact, the city is often praised for its youth programs, which include holiday events, craft workshops, dance classes, summer camps and sports leagues. Developing an educational initiative aimed at Sunrise teens was a natural extension of the city’s family focus.

At the request of the City Commission, staff reached out to three public high schools attended by Sunrise residents. Encouraged by the enthusiastic reception from Piper High School, Western High School and Plantation High School, a partnership was formed. City staff worked to create a framework and curriculum for Sunrise Leadership Academy (SLA) – a hands-on civics program.
