
Planning and Development Director

The Planning and Development Director serves as a strategic leader and technical expert in guiding the physical development of the City of Chamblee. Reporting to the City Manager, this senior-level role is responsible for administering and enforcing zoning ordinances, overseeing land development activities, and implementing planning policies that align with Chamblee’s Comprehensive Plan and strategic goals.
The Director provides expert guidance to the Planning Commission, Mayor, City Council, and the public, ensuring development initiatives are consistent with community priorities and legal standards. This position also supervises a talented team within the Planning and Development Department, fostering a culture of customer service, technical excellence, and collaboration across departments and with regional and state planning agencies.
The role combines day-to-day operational management with visionary planning and policy work, including comprehensive plan updates, mobility and sustainability initiatives, and the continual modernization of zoning codes. The Director is a visible leader in the community, engaging regularly with developers, residents, architects, and business owners to support thoughtful and sustainable growth.
Qualifications:
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree is strongly preferred.
Experience: A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in municipal planning, zoning, or land development, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory or management role.
Certifications: AICP certification is preferred.
Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of planning principles, zoning codes, subdivision regulations, and GIS applications; skilled in the interpretation and application of city ordinances and land development standards.
Communication: Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; experience conducting public meetings and delivering presentations to boards, commissions, and elected officials.
Leadership & Collaboration: Proven ability to lead high-performing teams, collaborate across departments, and work constructively with developers, neighborhood groups, and regulatory agencies.
