SUMMARY OF POSITION INFORMATION & TYPICAL DUTIES

The City of Merriam is seeking a full-time Planner to perform a variety of technical, administrative, and professional tasks, including research and related project work in the Community Development Department. Responsibilities will include processing applications for rezoning cases and requests for conditional/special uses, as well as Board of Zoning Appeals and sign permits. Will be responsible for reviewing applications to ensure proper file content and timeliness as required by ordinance and state law provisions. The Planner will provide information related to the existing zoning of the property, ordinances, subdivision regulations, building permits, flood zones, and other relevant code provisions. May exercise supervision and/or guidance of seasonal interns. Will work under the close supervision and direction of the Community Development Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or other related field. Some experience with technical, administrative, and professional work in community development, neighborhood planning and/or permit processing environment. Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

• Working knowledge of computers, modern office practices, and procedures
• Ability to effectively communicate and maintain successful working relationships
• Knowledge of basic planning principles and practices
• Ability to interpret site plans, maps, architectural plans, specifications, and legal descriptions
• Ability to read and interpret applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations
• Working knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) database and software
• Must be physically able to move on or around active construction sites and buildings under construction
• Must possess a valid State driver’s license
