Assistant City Manager
The City of College Park, Maryland, is seeking an exceptional municipal executive, either an emerging leader or an experienced professional, who is adept at navigating all facets of municipal operations to serve as one of two senior executive positions reporting directly to the City Manager This role is an integral part of the City’s executive leadership team and offers a significant opportunity to work closely with the City Manager in guiding the City.
The Assistant City Manager will provide operational leadership for key service and infrastructure functions that support smart growth, high-quality service delivery, and sound fiscal management. This position will also assist the City Manager in various assignments related to organizational goals and objectives, strategic planning and priorities, special projects, and operational efficiencies. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to blend strategic vision with strong operational execution, effective leadership, and meaningful stakeholder engagement in support of the City Manager, the Mayor, and the City Council.
This executive-level position reports directly to the City Manager and collaborates closely with Department Directors and other senior leadership within the organization to support the City's mission and vision. As a senior executive, the Assistant City Manager will offer strategic oversight of specific assigned departments. The role involves frequent interaction with the Mayor and Council, as well as community stakeholders, and acting on behalf of the City Manager as needed. Additionally, the Assistant City Manager will assist with the preparation and oversight of the City’s annual budget and strategic plan.
The ideal candidate is:
• Responsive, politically astute—yet nonpartisan—leader who collaborates effectively with elected officials, staff, and the community.
• Understanding of the diverse functions of municipal departments.
• Communicative and has exceptional interpersonal skills.
The successful candidate will have:
• A master’s degree in public or business administration.
• A minimum of 8-10 years of progressively responsible management experience, preferably in local government.
• A valid driver’s license and the ability to drive to various meetings throughout the state.
• Knowledge of municipal sustainability practices is a plus
This is a full-time, exempt position. The starting salary is $140,000- $160,000, depending on qualifications. The city offers a generous benefits package, including Maryland State Retirement.
