This is the 2010 nomination of Alachua County, Florida's Energy Conservation Strategies Commission (ECSC) for the Community Sustainability Award. County Manager Randall H. Reid is credited with developing this commission to address the County's growing ecological footprint. The ECSC established over 200 goals based on their guiding principles of energy use: reduce consumption, enhance energy efficiency, and promote renewable energy deployment. Based on ECSC conservation recommendations for County operations, utility consumption was estimated to be reduced by 30% by the end of 2010. Additionally, over the 15 year life of the proposed residential upgrades, 150,000 tons of CO2e would be eliminated from 6,000 low income households.
