This is the 2010 nomination of Manassas, Virginia's Week of Hope program for the Community Sustainability Award. City Manager Lawrence D. Hughes is credited with helping develop a neighborhood clean-up program to encourage residents to not only clean their own properties to avoid fines from zoning and property maintenance violations by offering volunteer help , but also other abandoned homes with the goal of deterring crime. In 2008 the 900 people who volunteered saved the city $142,244 in man-hours.
