The Suwanee City Council determined a wide-ranging strategic plan (i.e., a plan that goes beyond land use planning) would provide the roadmap for where Suwanee needs to head next. Creating a shared community vision for the next decade would require that citizens be engaged more actively, broadly, and intensely in the process than ever before. Community involvement in this plan was not just a nicety or “check- the-box” component; it would be crucial. Therefore, Suwanee engaged citizens in unique, even quirky, ways. No stodgy “town hall” meetings were held. Instead, the City kicked off the process with a FIVE-week open house, held in an empty downtown storefront, replete with games, interactive exercises, and moon pies. Then, nearly 300 residents participated in a series of roundtable discussions; the City made a conscious decision that no staff, Councilmembers, or consultants attend. And, when it came time to release the plan draft, Suwanee hosted, not a meeting but, a covered-dish picnic complete with a bluegrass band.
