"In 2009, a 25-year old female was shot to death in front of her young son at their home. The suspect was the female's estranged boyfriend."
When the city of Janesville, WI concluded that its domestic violence incidence rates and levels of violence were too high, it created a Domestic Violence Intervention Team. The purpose of the team was to conduct follow-up meetings with victims and keep them appraised of their support and legal options. Victims would often forget information delivered by officers on the scene due to the stress of the moment. Officers also conducted investigations to ensure that victims were given their 72 hours away from suspects.
As a result of the team and community involvement, police responded to 14% fewer domestic violence related calls in 2011.
This case study was nominated for ICMA's Annual Awards Program.
