The Making Every Student Accountable (M.E.S.A.) program involves a successful partnership between Mesa Unified Schools, the Mesa Police Department, and local counseling organizations and businesses that directly targets chronically truant discipline cases whose wayward behavior and lack of socialization skills often result in failing grades at school and gang associations or involvement. The program is composed of two individual nine-week sessions during the course of the school calendar year, with an average attendance varying between 35-45 participants in each session. Beginning immediately following dismissal, sessions continue until 6:00 p.m. for nine consecutive weeks.  These represent the peak hours when juvenile crime occurs. Program enrollment is non-punitive; participants are there of their own volition and that of their parents/guardians. In an effort to help redirect these troubled youths and instill within them a sense of civic consciousness, the program includes a daily physical fitness regimen, community service projects, parents/guardians of participating students meetings to actively participate in the redirection of their children.
