Through its weekly crime prevention television show, the Lompoc, California (41,103), police department reaches an audience of 2,000 to 3,000 people instead of the 10 to 15 people who might attend a crime-prevention talk by a police officer. The live, hour-long show features recent incidents in the city, a list of the “most wanted,” crime maps for the past week, a crime-prevention tip, and an interview. Viewers can call into the show with questions. Several volunteers use the local cable company’s cameras and other equipment to produce the show, which is broadcast on the city’s cable access television channel. The program has been on the air for more than four years and the audience has been very receptive to it.
