As early as 1994 the Santa Monica City Council began to address sustainability issues in the community. The Sustainable City Plan was first proposed by a citizen advisory group but over the years has grown to a much bigger initiative. It has a clearly defined structure, which allows it to be easily applied in other communities. The program addresses 8 specific “Goal Areas” which include, Resource Conservation, Environmental and Public Health, Transportation, Economic Development, Open Space and Land Use, Housing, Community Education and Civic Participation, and Human Dignity.
