Community sustainability is about more than environmental sustainability for the city of Gladstone, Missouri.  Beyond recycling, carbon dioxide emissions, and clean air, the city sought to extend the longevity of its citizens through a community health and wellness program.

The program was composed of various activity-based and nutritional competitions between groups in the community.  In order to encourage walking and other physical activity, the city partnered with the State of Missouri to build trails throughout the city.  Trails led to major locations such as libraries, community colleges, shopping malls, and more.  The results of the program were collected using before and after surveys.  The surveys showed increases in community energy and healthy eating, with decreases in fast food consumption.

This case study was nominated for ICMA's Annual Awards Program.
