Section Chief of Planning, Permitting & Engineering
City of Charleston, SC
Charleston unfolds like a living postcard – graceful, storied, and endlessly inviting. Set along the Atlantic coast and nearly centered between South Carolina’s northern and southern borders, the City stands at a symbolic crossroads where America’s past and future meet. Its charm comes from this balance: breathtaking ocean views and world class golf, centuries old architecture and vibrant modern districts, a deep commitment to preservation paired with a clear drive toward innovation.
Charleston is seeking an exceptional, achievement oriented Section Chief, an experienced leader who can partner effectively with the Mayor’s Office, City leadership, fellow Section Chiefs, Department Heads, and the community to elevate Charleston into a first class city in planning, permitting, and engineering. To succeed, the ideal candidate will bring significant, progressively responsible experience in planning and engineering management, along with the leadership presence needed to guide a complex, high performing organization.
In terms of specific skills, the individual will bring a broad range of presentation and communication skills, and have a high level of motivation, with a demonstrated ability to remain impartial while giving attention to each department. The individual will be well-versed with City Council meetings and protocol, possess strong fiscal accountability, and have experience in financial planning for assigned functions. Just as importantly, the next Section Chief will be able to develop and implement strategies that address the challenges and opportunities unique to Charleston’s environment, ensuring that planning, permitting, and engineering efforts are both forward thinking and resilient.
The position requires a bachelor’s degree in planning, urban or regional planning, engineering, or a related field with 15-19 years of experience; a master’s degree or additional certifications and licensing is preferred with 9-12 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of management experience is preferred.
The salary range is $138,688 to $201,571. The salary will depend on qualifications and experience. Benefits are excellent.
